Matthias Bamert is a Swiss-born, London-based composer and musical director renowned for his versatile output spanning orchestral, choral, operatic, and film scores. Educated at the Royal College of Music with Oliver Knussen and John Woolrich, Bamert initially gained prominence as a composer of rigorously crafted, often neo-classical works. His early pieces demonstrated a keen ear for texture and harmonic colour, earning performances from leading ensembles like the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.

He transitioned significantly into conducting and musical direction in the 1990s, becoming a highly sought-after opera conductor specializing in 20th and 21st-century repertoire. He served as Music Director of the Stadttheater Bern (1994-2004) and has conducted extensively at major European opera houses including La Scala, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Royal Danish Opera.

Bamert’s compositional style now reflects this broader experience – incorporating dramatic pacing and theatricality alongside his established contrapuntal skill. He continues to compose regularly, with recent works focusing on vocal and chamber music. He is also actively involved in promoting contemporary music through workshops and masterclasses.
