Experience Matthew Freeman
Matthew Freeman is a highly respected multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger primarily known for his work with the American psychedelic rock band, Moon Duo. Beginning his career in the San Francisco Bay Area noise/experimental scene in the late 1990s, he was a founding member of the influential group, O’Death, blending folk, punk, and dark Americana.
Freeman joined Moon Duo in 2010 alongside Sanae Yamada, becoming integral to their signature sound – a hypnotic blend of krautrock, shoegaze, and drone. He contributes heavily to songwriting and production alongside Yamada. Beyond Moon Duo, Freeman has collaborated with artists like Peaking Lights and Howling Owl Records artists.
His musical style is characterized by intricate basslines (often played on a fretless bass), atmospheric textures created through effects pedals, and a commitment to analog synthesis. Moon Duo has released several critically acclaimed albums including *Mazes* (2011) and *Stars Are the Light* (2014), consistently garnering praise from publications like Pitchfork and The Wire for their innovative soundscapes and live performances. He continues to tour internationally with Moon Duo and pursue independent compositional projects.
