Matthew Barley is a British cellist renowned for pushing the boundaries of his instrument and genre. Initially trained classically at the Yehudi Menuhin School and King’s College London, Barley quickly distinguished himself as a compelling soloist, performing concertos with major orchestras worldwide including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia.

However, Barley’s career significantly broadened beyond traditional classical performance. He’s become a highly sought-after collaborator across diverse musical landscapes – jazz, folk, electronic music, and theatre – working with artists like Elvis Costello, Nitin Sawhney, and Joanna MacGregor. This cross-genre exploration is central to his artistic identity.

He’s commissioned and premiered numerous works specifically written for him, demonstrating a commitment to contemporary music. Notably, his project “The Barley Project” involved extensive improvisation and collaboration with various musicians globally.
