Experience Maruja
Maruja, born Maria Juana Vieira in Lisbon, Portugal (1935-2019), was a pivotal figure in Portuguese contemporary music, though largely overlooked internationally during her lifetime. Initially trained as a pianist at the Lisbon Conservatory, she abandoned conventional performance for experimental composition in the 1960s. Heavily influenced by musique concrète and the work of Pierre Schaeffer, Maruja pioneered electroacoustic music in Portugal, often incorporating field recordings – particularly sounds of Lisbon’s streets and daily life – into her pieces.
Her compositions, frequently minimalist and intensely focused on sonic texture, explored themes of urban alienation and memory. Key works include “Antologia da Música Portuguesa” (1972), a groundbreaking collage of traditional fado fragments manipulated electronically, and “A Via Láctea” (1988). Despite facing censorship under the Estado Novo regime and limited resources throughout her career, Maruja consistently produced innovative work.
Recognition grew posthumously; her archives were meticulously preserved by her son, João Vieira, leading to increased international performances and recordings.
