Martin Stadtfeld is a German concert accordionist renowned for expanding the instrument’s repertoire and perception within classical music. Born in 1978, he initially trained classically on piano before dedicating himself to the accordion, studying with renowned professors like Stefan Hippe. Stadtfeld’s career gained significant momentum after winning the prestigious “Prix d’Or” at the international accordion competition in Klingenthal in 1997.

He’s distinguished by his transcriptions of works originally composed for piano, organ, and other instruments – notably those of J.S. Bach, creating a signature style that blends technical virtuosity with expressive phrasing. Stadtfeld actively commissions new works, broadening the contemporary accordion repertoire; composers like Dobrinka Tabakova have written specifically for him.

His extensive discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of Bach’s complete works for keyboard (transcribed for accordion) on Deutsche Grammophon, alongside albums featuring music by Scarlatti, Piazzolla, and original compositions. He frequently performs internationally as a soloist and with orchestras, challenging conventional notions of the accordion's capabilities and solidifying its place in serious classical concert programming.
