Experience Mark Arbus

Mark Arbus (born Mark Anthony Arbaugh, October 26, 1956) is an American musician and composer primarily known for his distinctive blend of jazz, funk, and spoken word. Emerging from the New York City downtown music scene in the 1980s, Arbus gained recognition for his innovative use of sampling and looping technology *before* it became mainstream. He initially released material on independent labels like Profile Records and later established his own label, Sound Barrier Records.

His music frequently incorporates found sounds, film dialogue snippets, and beat poetry alongside original instrumentation. Albums like *Enjoy* (1986) and *Ponderosa* (1994) are considered seminal works in the electro-acoustic and alternative jazz genres. Arbus’s style is characterized by its atmospheric textures, complex rhythms, and often darkly humorous lyrical content.

Beyond album releases, he's contributed music to film soundtracks (including work with Jim Jarmusch) and collaborated with artists across diverse musical landscapes. Though maintaining a relatively low public profile, Arbus continues to compose and perform, influencing generations of experimental musicians with his pioneering approach to sound collage and rhythmic innovation.
