Marcello Carelli (1926-2008) was a highly influential Italian classical guitarist, renowned for his technical precision and lyrical interpretations. Born in Foggia, Italy, he began studying guitar at age seven and quickly demonstrated prodigious talent. He received formal training at the Naples Conservatory under Umberto Casale, graduating with top honors.

Carelli’s international career blossomed in the 1950s, performing extensively throughout Europe, North and South America, and Asia. He was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of Spanish composers like Francisco Tárrega and Isaac Albéniz, alongside Italian repertoire. A hallmark of his style was a warm tone and expressive phrasing, avoiding overly virtuosic displays in favor of musicality.

Throughout his career, Carelli made numerous recordings for labels including Vox and RCA Victor, becoming a significant figure in popularizing classical guitar music. He also dedicated considerable time to teaching, holding professorships at the Naples Conservatory and the Accademia Musicale Pescarese. His students carried on his legacy, influencing subsequent generations of guitarists. He is remembered as a pivotal artist who bridged traditional technique with emotive performance practice.
