The Malmö Symphony Orchestra (Malmö Symfoniorkester) is Sweden’s oldest symphony orchestra, tracing its origins back to 1901. Based in Malmö, it’s a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life and a nationally significant ensemble. Throughout its history, the orchestra has been led by prominent conductors including Wilhelm Stenhammar, who served as principal conductor from 1907-1922, establishing a strong foundation for Swedish repertoire.

Known for its versatility, the MSO performs a broad range of music from the classical canon to contemporary works, frequently commissioning new pieces. They maintain a strong commitment to accessibility, offering diverse concert formats and educational programs. The orchestra regularly collaborates with internationally renowned soloists and conductors.

Significant accomplishments include numerous recordings – often focusing on Scandinavian composers – and consistent critical acclaim for their performances. The MSO is the resident orchestra of the Malmö Opera and performs extensively throughout Skåne County and beyond. They are currently led by Chief Conductor Robert Trevino, appointed in 2019, continuing a tradition of artistic excellence and innovation. Their modern home is the Malmö Live Concert Hall, opened in 2015.
