Majid Bekkas is a Moroccan-born, France-based *oud* virtuoso and composer, renowned for bridging traditional Gnawa music with jazz, flamenco, and classical influences. Born in El Jadida, Morocco in 1974, Bekkas began his musical journey within his family’s Gnawa *mlakha* (ritual practice) tradition, learning from his grandfather, a respected *maâlem* (Gnawa master). He formally studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris.
Bekkas’s distinctive style blends the hypnotic rhythms and spiritual depth of Gnawa with sophisticated harmonic structures and improvisational elements. He leads the critically acclaimed Majid Bekkas Ensemble and frequently collaborates with prominent musicians across genres, including Bugge Wesseltoft and Renaud Garcia-Fons.
He has released numerous albums to international acclaim, including "Maaqood" (2003) and “Barcelona in Morocco” (2017), receiving awards like the Grand Prix SACEM for traditional music.
