Lisa Mezzacappa is a critically acclaimed bassist, composer, and bandleader based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work consistently bridges the gap between jazz improvisation and contemporary composed music, often incorporating elements of Italian folk music – a direct reflection of her Italian-American heritage.

Mezzacappa’s career spans over two decades, marked by numerous ensemble projects including her long-running quintet, Omnibus; the trio with Jessica Ackerley and Aaron Bendikson; and collaborations with artists like Myra Melford and John Zorn. She's received significant recognition for her large-scale compositions, notably “Gratitude Practice” (2017), commissioned by Roulette and exploring themes of family history and resilience.

A prolific recording artist, Mezzacappa’s discography includes albums on labels like Enja Records and Nine Winds Records. She has been consistently lauded for her virtuosic bass playing – both acoustic and electric – and her evocative compositional voice. Awards include multiple grants from the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and commissions from organizations like Chamber Music America.
