Laurence Cummings is a highly regarded British harpsichordist, organist, and conductor specializing in Baroque and early Classical music. He gained prominence as Director of the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) from 2011-2018, leading the ensemble to critical acclaim for historically informed performances. Prior to this, he was Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church, Oxford (1998-2008).
Cummings’ discography is extensive, featuring numerous recordings with the AAM, The English Concert, and as a solo artist on labels like Harmonia Mundine and BIS Records. He’s particularly celebrated for his interpretations of Handel – notably complete recordings of *Rodelinda* and *Ariodante* – alongside Scarlatti and Purcell.
His playing style is characterized by rhythmic vitality, clarity, and a nuanced understanding of ornamentation typical of the period. Beyond performance, Cummings is a respected scholar and teacher; he frequently gives masterclasses internationally. He currently serves as Artistic Director of the Göttingen Handel Festival.
