Lan Shui (蓝水), born in Shanghai, is a highly acclaimed Chinese conductor renowned for his passionate interpretations of both Western classical repertoire and contemporary Chinese compositions. He studied conducting with renowned teachers including Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan.
Shui served as Music Director of the China Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998 to 2014, significantly raising its international profile through extensive touring, including performances at Carnegie Hall and the BBC Proms. Prior to this, he held positions with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra as Associate Conductor.
His discography includes recordings with Naxos, featuring works by composers like Tan Dun and Bright Sheng, championing modern Chinese music alongside established masters like Beethoven and Brahms. Shui’s conducting style is characterized by its dramatic intensity, lyrical phrasing, and meticulous attention to orchestral detail.
