Lafayette Gilchrist is a highly respected Baltimore-based pianist, composer, and bandleader deeply rooted in the city’s jazz tradition while forging a powerfully unique sound. Born in 1955, Gilchrist honed his skills playing with legendary figures like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday (during her final performances), and Art Blakey as a young musician. He's particularly known for his extended tenure (over 20 years) with the band New Trio, alongside bassist John Lee and drummer Nasar Abadey – a group celebrated for its improvisational prowess and deep groove.

Gilchrist’s style blends hard bop, gospel, blues, and a distinctly percussive piano technique influenced by McCoy Tyner. His compositions often reflect the social and political realities of Baltimore, earning him recognition as a vital voice for the city.
