Experience Krystian Zimerman

Krystian Zimerman is a Polish pianist renowned for his intensely individual and often controversial approach to performance. Born in Zabrze, Poland, in 1956, he rose to international prominence after winning the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1975). Unlike many competition winners, Zimerman deliberately limited his repertoire, focusing almost exclusively on works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Brahms – composers he believes have maintained enduring relevance.

His interpretations are characterized by meticulous preparation, a profound understanding of historical performance practice (particularly regarding temperament and instrument setup – he personally adjusts his pianos), and a refusal to record unless completely satisfied with the result. This has led to a relatively small but highly regarded discography.

Zimerman is also a skilled luthier, building violins as a hobby and demonstrating a deep engagement with the physical aspects of musical instruments. He’s known for cancelling performances if piano conditions aren't met or if he feels unprepared. A recipient of numerous awards including the Légion d'Honneur, Zimerman remains one of the most respected – and enigmatic – pianists performing today.
