Kris Monson is a highly respected American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator based in the Pacific Northwest. Beginning his professional career in the 1980s, Monson quickly established himself as a versatile performer adept at both tenor and soprano saxophone. He’s notably collaborated with prominent figures like Buddy DeFranco, Kenny Wheeler, and Lee Konitz, absorbing influences that shaped his distinctive sound – often described as lyrical and harmonically sophisticated, blending post-bop sensibilities with elements of free improvisation.
Monson has released over twenty albums as a leader or co-leader on labels including Origin Records and Cadence Jazz Records. His discography showcases original compositions alongside interpretations of standards, consistently earning critical acclaim for its melodic invention and ensemble interplay. A dedicated educator for over three decades, he currently teaches at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
