Experience Keitaro Harada
Keitaro Harada is a highly respected Japanese shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player and composer, renowned for bridging traditional Japanese music with contemporary genres like jazz, ambient, and world music. Born in 1973, he began shakuhachi training at age seven under the tutelage of his father, Watazumido Shuso, a master of the Kinko school. He formally attained the rank of *shihan* (master) within that school in 1999.
Harada’s career extends beyond traditional *honkyoku* repertoire; he actively collaborates with diverse artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Anouar Brahem, and Philip Glass. His discography includes critically acclaimed albums like “Sakura Sakura” (2003), exploring traditional melodies with modern arrangements, and “Umimashi” (2014), featuring collaborations with various musicians.
He’s known for his innovative techniques expanding the instrument's sonic possibilities – incorporating extended techniques and electronic processing while maintaining respect for its cultural heritage.
