Experience Karl Ratzer
Karl Ratzer (born 1951, Vienna) is an Austrian composer, improviser, and performer specializing in extended techniques on the acoustic bass guitar. Initially trained classically on double bass, Ratzer pioneered a unique approach to the instrument, employing preparations – objects placed on or between strings – to create percussive and textural soundscapes.
He became known for his work with Austrian free improvisation groups such as FIALA and The Phil Minton Trio. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Ratzer extensively toured and recorded with diverse musicians including Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, and Maggie Nicols. His solo work focuses heavily on prepared bass guitar, showcasing a vast range of timbres beyond conventional playing.
Ratzer’s compositions often explore microtonality and unconventional notation. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to contemporary music, including grants from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture. He continues to perform internationally and lead workshops focusing on extended techniques and improvisation. His discography includes albums on labels like Incus and hatART.
