Experience Juilliard String Quartet
The Juilliard String Quartet stands as one of the most celebrated and influential chamber ensembles of the 20th and 21st centuries. Founded in 1946 at The Juilliard School, the quartet initially comprised violinists Robert Mann and David Sarnoff, violist Richard Kaplansky, and cellist Raphael Hyman. Throughout its history, the ensemble has seen member changes, but consistently maintained a dedication to profound musical interpretation.
Renowned for their intensely focused and emotionally resonant performances, the Juilliard Quartet championed the works of composers like Bartók (giving the American premiere of his String Quartet No. 6), Schoenberg, and contemporary American composers. They were the first string quartet to tour the Soviet Union with State Department sponsorship (1960), breaking cultural barriers.
Holding residencies at both The Library of Congress (1972-1982) and Lincoln Center (1985-present), they’ve fostered musical education and performance. The quartet has garnered numerous accolades including nine Grammy Awards for Best Classical Chamber Performance, solidifying their legacy as pivotal figures in string quartet performance and scholarship.
