Joyce Spencer is a highly respected American jazz vocalist and educator, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1950. Emerging prominently in the 1970s, she initially gained recognition through her collaborations with prominent figures like Sun Ra, appearing on several of his recordings including *Space Is the Place* (live version, 1973). Spencer’s vocal style is characterized by its rich timbre, improvisational skill, and a unique blend of jazz, blues, and avant-garde influences.
She released her debut album, *In the Name of Love*, in 1978 on Strut Records, showcasing her distinctive phrasing and lyrical interpretation. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Spencer continued to perform and record independently while also dedicating herself to music education. She taught vocal jazz at institutions including the University of California, Irvine and California State University, Long Beach.
A dedicated preservationist of vocal jazz traditions, Spencer has consistently championed the work of lesser-known female jazz singers. Her later recordings include *Heavy Weather* (2008) and *Second Season* (2014), demonstrating continued artistic growth and a commitment to her craft.
