Experience Josep Pons
Josep Pons (born 1957, Barcelona) is a highly respected Spanish conductor renowned for his interpretations of 20th and 21st-century repertoire, particularly Spanish composers. He served as Music Director of the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) from 1998 to 2023, a period marked by significant artistic growth and international touring, including prominent appearances at the BBC Proms and Musikfest Berlin.
Pons’s conducting style is characterized by clarity, precision, and a deep understanding of orchestral color. While comfortable with standard repertoire, he has championed works by composers like Cristóbal Halffter, Luis de Pablo, and Joan Guinjoan, commissioning numerous new pieces. He's also known for his insightful performances of opera, having conducted productions at Teatro Real in Madrid and beyond.
Beyond his long tenure with the OBC, Pons frequently guest conducts leading orchestras worldwide including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the London Symphony Orchestra. He received the National Music Prize of Catalonia in 2003 and holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona recognizing his contribution to Catalan musical life.
