Experience José Sánchez-Sanz
José Sánchez-Sanz (born 1953, Santander, Spain) is a highly respected classical guitarist, composer, and pedagogue. He began studying guitar at age eight and quickly distinguished himself, winning numerous national and international competitions including the prestigious Andrés Segovia Competition in 1972. This win launched an international performing career that has spanned over five decades, encompassing performances across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Sánchez-Sanz is known for his technically brilliant and emotionally expressive interpretations of both standard repertoire – including works by Bach, Sor, and Villa-Lobos – and contemporary compositions written for him by composers like Cristóbal Halffter. He’s a champion of Spanish music, particularly lesser-known works from the Romantic period.
Beyond performance, Sánchez-Sanz holds a distinguished academic position as Professor of Guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. He has authored several pedagogical materials on guitar technique and interpretation widely used internationally. His discography includes numerous recordings for labels like Harmonia Mundi and includes critically acclaimed albums dedicated to the complete works of Francisco Tárrega.
