Experience José Ferreira

José Ferreira (born 1950, Portugal) is a highly respected Portuguese guitarist and composer, central to the development of contemporary Portuguese guitar music. Initially trained classically, Ferreira transitioned to dedicate himself to the Portuguese guitar – *guitarra portuguesa* – in the 1970s, becoming a pivotal figure in its revival after a period of decline following Salazar’s Estado Novo regime.

He’s renowned for expanding the instrument’s technical possibilities and stylistic range beyond traditional Fado accompaniment. While deeply rooted in Fado’s harmonic language, Ferreira incorporates influences from jazz, classical music, and world music traditions into his compositions. He's known for intricate fingerstyle techniques and a distinctive tone emphasizing clarity and emotional depth.

Ferreira has collaborated with numerous prominent Fado singers including Maria da Nazaré, Camancho, and Madredeus (where he was a key member for many years), significantly shaping their sound. He’s released several critically acclaimed solo albums showcasing his compositional prowess and virtuosity, including "Vozes do Atlântico" (1992) and “Lisboa em Movimento” (2003).
