Experience José Antonio López
José Antonio López (born 1960, Havana, Cuba) is a highly respected Cuban percussionist, composer, and educator renowned for his mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms. He began his professional career in the late 1970s with Grupo Irakere, one of Cuba’s most influential bands, contributing significantly to their innovative fusion of jazz, rock, and traditional Cuban music. López remained with Irakere through the 1980s, touring internationally and appearing on numerous recordings.
Following Irakere, he became a sought-after session musician and formed his own ensembles, notably the José Antonio López Sexteto. His style is characterized by complex polyrhythms, virtuosic timbales playing, and a deep understanding of *rumba*, *son*, and other foundational Cuban genres.
López has collaborated with artists like Paquito D'Rivera, Chucho Valdés (also from Irakere), and Michel Camilo. He’s dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-Cuban musical traditions; he frequently leads workshops and masterclasses globally. His discography includes several albums as a leader showcasing original compositions and arrangements rooted in Cuban heritage.
