Experience João Pedro Melão

João Pedro Melão is a Portuguese musician, composer, and producer recognized for his innovative blend of jazz, contemporary classical, and electronic music. Born in 1983, he initially trained classically on piano before expanding into improvisation and composition at the Hot Club de Portugal and later, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Melão’s work often features intricate arrangements and a focus on textural exploration, utilizing both acoustic instruments (piano being central) and electronic processing. He leads the João Pedro Melão Ensemble, which has released several critically acclaimed albums including “A Mértola” (2016), inspired by Alentejo’s polyphonic singing traditions, and “The Visible Hand” (2020), exploring themes of control and freedom.

He's collaborated with prominent figures like Maria João Pires and Peter Evans, demonstrating his versatility. Melão’s compositions have been commissioned by institutions such as Gulbenkian Foundation and Casa da Música. He received the Prémio José Carlos Freitas in 2017 recognizing emerging Portuguese composers. His music consistently receives praise for its intellectual depth and emotional resonance, establishing him as a leading voice in contemporary Portuguese music.
