Experience Jennifer Koh
Jennifer Koh is a highly acclaimed American violinist recognized for her intensely expressive performances and dedication to expanding the violin repertoire. Born in Chicago to Korean immigrant parents, she began violin studies at age three and quickly distinguished herself, winning the Concert Artists Guild International Competition in 1994.
Koh’s career encompasses performances with leading orchestras worldwide, including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and London Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with conductors like David Finckel and Yo-Yo Ma. She is particularly celebrated for her interpretations of both standard repertoire – Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas being a cornerstone – and contemporary works.
A champion of new music, Koh has commissioned and premiered numerous pieces by composers like Kaija Saariaho and Joan Tower. Her project “Bach Ysaye,” reimagining Bach’s solo violin works through the lens of Ysaÿe’s sonatas, garnered significant critical acclaim. She received a MacArthur Fellowship (“Genius Grant”) in 2023 recognizing her exceptional artistry and commitment to broadening the landscape of classical music. Koh currently serves as Artistic Advisor to the Seattle Symphony.
