Jean-Michel Blais is a Canadian pianist and composer gaining international recognition for his emotionally resonant and meticulously crafted neo-classical music. Initially trained in classical piano, Blais shifted focus after experiencing focal dystonia, a neurological condition affecting muscle control. This led him to explore prepared piano techniques – altering the instrument’s sound with bolts, screws, and felt – becoming a defining characteristic of his style.

His debut album, *Il*, released in 2016, garnered a Polaris Music Prize nomination. Subsequent albums like *Dans ma main* (2018) and *Chrysalis* (2021) further cemented his reputation for intimate, textural compositions blending ambient, minimalist, and contemporary classical elements. *Chrysalis* notably won the 2022 Polaris Music Prize.

Blais's work frequently incorporates electronic processing alongside acoustic piano sounds, creating a unique sonic landscape often described as melancholic yet hopeful. He’s collaborated with artists like CFCF and has scored films, including the documentary *Les chiens de guerre*.
