Experience János Kovács
János Kovács (born 1952, Budapest) is a highly respected Hungarian jazz guitarist, composer, and educator. Emerging in the 1970s, he quickly became a pivotal figure in Hungarian jazz, initially gaining prominence with the Modern Jazz Quartet led by János Sajós. Kovács’s playing is characterized by a lyrical, blues-infused style deeply rooted in bebop but incorporating elements of folk and world music – particularly Roma traditions – reflecting his heritage.
He spent several years as a session musician before forming his own ensembles, consistently exploring diverse musical avenues. A significant period was his decade-long collaboration with singer Katalin Szvorák, blending jazz instrumentation with Hungarian folk song arrangements. Kovács has released numerous albums as a leader, including critically acclaimed works like "Kovács János és a Harmónia" and recordings with international artists.
Beyond performance, he’s dedicated to jazz education, teaching at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest for many years. He received the Kossuth Prize, Hungary's highest state award for artists, in 2015 recognizing his lifetime achievements and contribution to Hungarian culture. His influence extends across generations of Hungarian musicians.
