Born on March 4, 1947, in Mysen, Norway, Garbarek began playing the saxophone at an early age. In his early career, he experimented with various genres including rock and free jazz before eventually finding his signature sound in the realm of ECM-style jazz. He joined the prestigious ECM Records label in the early 1970s and has since released numerous albums as both a bandleader and collaborator.
