Experience James Hall
James Hall (born James Joseph Hall, October 29, 1941 – July 13, 2023) was an American singer-songwriter and pianist, best known for his work as a solo artist and for writing hits for other musicians. Emerging from the vibrant Memphis music scene of the 1960s, Hall initially gained recognition as a staff songwriter for Stax Records, co-writing “Try a Little Tenderness” with Otis Redding.
Hall’s own recording career blossomed in the early 1970s with Atlantic Records, releasing critically acclaimed albums like *Railroad Man* (1973) and *Something to Sing About* (1975). His style blended elements of blues, country soul, and gospel, characterized by his emotive vocals and sophisticated piano playing. He toured extensively with artists like The Allman Brothers Band and Bonnie Raitt.
Though not a mainstream chart-topper, Hall earned respect within the music industry for his songwriting craft; songs were also recorded by Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Irma Thomas.
