Experience Jacques Schwarz-Bart
Jacques Schwarz-Bart is a Guadeloupean saxophonist, composer, and arranger renowned for his innovative blend of jazz, Caribbean rhythms – particularly those of *gwoka* – and electronic music. Born in 1962 in Paris to Haitian novelist René Scherer and Guadeloupean poet Simone Schwarz-Bart, his musical upbringing was steeped in literary and cultural richness.
He initially trained classically on the saxophone before immersing himself in jazz, studying with John Mc Laughlin and becoming a member of the Jasper van't Hof Trio in the 1980s. Schwarz-Bart’s solo career blossomed with albums like *Jazz à Saint-Barth* (1999) and *Abyssima* (2006), which established his signature sound – a deeply melodic and rhythmically complex exploration of his Creole heritage.
His work often features looped samples of traditional *gwoka* percussion alongside soaring saxophone lines and atmospheric textures. He’s collaborated with artists like Archie Shepp and has received numerous awards, including a Victoires du Jazz award for Album of the Year in 2007 for *Abyssima*.
