Born in Belgrade in 1958, he rose to international prominence after winning the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1980 – a victory immediately followed by disqualification by the jury due to alleged psychological instability, a decision sparking significant debate within the music world.
Pogorelić’s career continued regardless, fueled by support from prominent figures like Arthur Rubinstein and Martha Argerich. He is celebrated for a uniquely powerful and percussive technique, characterized by dramatic contrasts in dynamics and tempo. His repertoire focuses heavily on Romantic composers, particularly Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Prokofiev.
He has released numerous acclaimed recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, including landmark interpretations of Chopin’s complete nocturnes and études. Pogorelić is known for his reclusive nature and infrequent concert appearances, contributing to his mystique. He received the Echo Klassik award in 2016 for his interpretation of Chopin’s piano concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic.
