Ivo Kahánek is a leading Czech pianist renowned for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire, particularly the works of Leoš Janáček. Born in 1986, he studied at the Academy of Music Arts in Prague and later with Imogen Cooper in London. Kahánek gained international recognition after winning the International Piano Competition in Cleveland (2008) and the Czech Concert Artists Guild Award.
His discography focuses heavily on Janáček – notably a critically acclaimed complete recording of Janáček’s piano works for Supraphon – but also includes composers like Debussy, Beethoven, and Martinů. He’s celebrated for a technically brilliant yet emotionally nuanced style, often described as possessing a distinctive rhythmic drive and captivating stage presence.
Kahánek frequently performs with major orchestras worldwide, including the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Beyond solo performance, he is dedicated to promoting contemporary music and actively commissions new works. He founded the festival *Janáčekův Máj* (Janáček May) dedicated to celebrating the composer's legacy.
