Experience Iveta Apkalna

Iveta Apkalna is a Latvian organist internationally recognized for her virtuosic technique and captivating interpretations. Born in Riga, she began her musical education at the Emīls Dārziņš Music School and continued at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, later studying with Hans-Ola Ericsson in Sweden.

Apkalna gained prominence winning First Prize at the 1985 International Organ Competition in Dublin, launching a global career. She is particularly celebrated for her command of the Rieger organ at the Sydney Opera House – a position she held as Organist-in-Residence from 2013-2016 – and her frequent performances on historically significant instruments across Europe and beyond.

Her repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works, often featuring transcriptions alongside original compositions. Apkalna is known for her adventurous programming, incorporating multimedia elements and improvisation into concerts. She has recorded extensively for labels like Ondine and Naxos, receiving critical acclaim for albums showcasing both standard repertoire and lesser-known works. Beyond performance, she’s a dedicated educator, leading masterclasses worldwide and inspiring a new generation of organists.
