Ingo Metzmacher is a highly respected German conductor renowned for his interpretations of 20th and 21st-century music, alongside a deep engagement with standard repertoire. Born in Lubeck in 1957, he initially studied piano and conducting, gaining early experience as a répétiteur at Deutsche Oper Berlin. He rose to prominence as General Music Director in Bielefeld (1993-1998) and later as Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (1998-2010), a position that significantly shaped his career.

Metzmacher is celebrated for his meticulous preparation, clarity of sound, and willingness to champion contemporary composers like Ligeti, Lachenmann, and Rihm. He’s a frequent guest conductor with leading orchestras worldwide, including the Vienna Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Notably, he conducted the premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s opera *L’Amour de loin* at the Salzburg Festival in 2000.
