Il Giardino Armonico, founded in 1989 by Giovanni Antonacci and Luca Pianca, is a highly acclaimed Italian period instrument ensemble specializing in Baroque and early Classical music. Initially focused on rediscovering forgotten composers like Carlo Gesualdo, the group rapidly gained international recognition for its intensely expressive and often dramatic interpretations.

Their early recordings, particularly those featuring madrigals and Monteverdi, were groundbreaking for their raw emotionality and historically informed performance practice – eschewing the smoothed-out textures common at the time. This approach extended to operatic repertoire, notably their critically lauded performances and recordings of Handel operas like *Rinaldo* and *Serse*.

Throughout the 2000s, Il Giardino Armonico expanded its scope to include Vivaldi, culminating in a complete recording of *The Four Seasons* that challenged conventional interpretations with its rhythmic vitality. While Antonacci remains the driving force, the ensemble’s personnel has evolved. They continue to tour internationally and record prolifically, consistently pushing boundaries within the historically informed performance movement and earning numerous awards including a Gramophone Award for Early Music.
