Experience Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century music, widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the era. Born in Russia, his early works were influenced by Rimsky-Korsakov and Russian folklore, notably *The Firebird* (1910), which brought him international acclaim following performances by Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
However, Stravinsky achieved notoriety – and sparked a riot – with *The Rite of Spring* (1913), a groundbreaking ballet characterized by its dissonant harmonies, irregular rhythms, and primal energy. He subsequently explored Neoclassicism in the 1920s, drawing inspiration from composers like Bach and Mozart (*Pulcinella*, 1920).
Following his move to the United States in 1940, Stravinsky embraced serialism – a twelve-tone technique pioneered by Schoenberg – demonstrated in works like *Cantata* (1952). Throughout his prolific career, he composed across numerous genres including opera, ballet, orchestral works, chamber music, and vocal pieces.
