Experience Idris Ackamoor
Idris Ackamoor (born February 27, 1953, Chicago, Illinois) is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader primarily known for his pioneering work in spiritual jazz and Afro-futurist music. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as the founder of The Pyramids, a group initially formed in Paris while Ackamoor was studying acting with Jerzy Grotowski. The Pyramids blended free improvisation, Egyptian mythology, and a deeply spiritual aesthetic, releasing albums like *Lalibela* (1974) which gained cult status.
Following a period of relative inactivity from the late 70s through the 90s, Ackamoor revitalized The Pyramids in the early 2000s, releasing a string of critically acclaimed albums on the Ubuntu label. His solo work often incorporates poetry and theatrical elements alongside saxophone and other instruments. Ackamoor’s music explores themes of ancient cultures, cosmic consciousness, and Black liberation. He has collaborated with artists like Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra Arkestra director Marshall Allen.
