Experience Hypnotic Clambake
Hypnotic Clambake is the musical project of American artist, Drew Daniel, originating in 1998. Initially a duo with Charles Matthews, it evolved into a solo venture following Matthews’ departure in 2002. Daniel’s work defies easy categorization, blending elements of plunderphonics, breakbeat, ambient, and IDM with a distinctly playful and often satirical approach to sampling.
Clambake gained prominence through releases on influential labels like Mille Plateaux and subsequently on his own Plinkton Records. Albums like *Acid Bunny* (2001) and *Baffled Unsent* (2006) are considered cornerstones of the glitch and experimental electronic music scenes. Daniel's technique frequently involves meticulously dissecting and recontextualizing existing recordings – often obscure pop songs or film dialogue – creating densely layered soundscapes.
Beyond album releases, Hypnotic Clambake has contributed significantly to remix work for artists like Matmos and Princess Leia. Daniel is also a noted academic, holding a PhD in English Literature and teaching at Middlebury College, informing the conceptual depth present within his musical output.
