Experience Hypnotic Brass Ensemble
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HBE) emerged from the Chicago South Side in the late 1990s, initially as a student group at the University of Chicago. Founded by brothers Delfeayo and Corey Marsalis (sons of jazz legend Ellis Marsalis), HBE quickly evolved beyond traditional marching band aesthetics. They blend jazz, funk, hip-hop, Afrobeat, and Eastern European brass band music into a uniquely energetic and improvisational sound.
The ensemble gained prominence through guerilla-style street performances and subway shows, building a dedicated following before releasing their self-titled debut album in 2004. They’ve since toured extensively internationally, sharing stages with artists like Gorillaz, Arcade Fire, and Janelle Monáe.
HBE's discography includes albums like *Jupiter* (2011) and *Book of Souls* (2016), consistently showcasing their dynamic arrangements and virtuosic playing. Notably, they contributed to Gorillaz's critically acclaimed album *Plastic Beach* (2010). Their performances are renowned for audience participation and a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere – moving beyond concert settings to include parades and public spaces.
