Hendrik Meurkens is a highly respected German jazz trombonist, vocalist, and composer renowned for his mastery of free improvisation and unique vocalizations alongside his instrumental prowess. Born in 1957, Meurkens initially gained prominence in the European free jazz scene of the 1980s, collaborating with figures like Conny Bauer and Sunny Murray. He relocated to New York City in 1989, becoming a fixture in the city’s vibrant avant-garde jazz community.

Meurkens’ style is characterized by extended techniques on the trombone – multiphonics, flutter-tonguing – blended with scat singing that often mimics or complements his instrumental lines. He's explored diverse settings, from solo performances to large ensembles, including leading his own groups like “Organic” and “Duo X.”

A prolific recording artist, Meurkens has released numerous albums as a leader and sideman on labels like FMP and CIMP. He’s also known for his long-standing association with Roswell Rudd, with whom he toured and recorded extensively.
