Gov't Mule is an American rock band formed in 1994 by Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar) and Allen Woody (bass), both of whom were members of the iconic Southern rock band, The Allman Brothers Band. The band's name is a reference to a quote from former Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts, who once said that Haynes played guitar like a "government mule."
Throughout their career, Gov't Mule has developed a distinctive style that blends elements of Southern rock, blues, funk, and jam band improvisation. Their music often features extended instrumental sections and showcases their exceptional musicianship. Haynes' soulful vocals and virtuosic guitar playing are complemented by the tight rhythm section of Matt Abts on drums and Jorgen Carlsson on bass.
Over the years, Gov't Mule has released numerous studio albums and live recordings that have garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. Some of their most notable albums include "Dose" (1998), "High & Mighty" (2006), and "Shout!" (2013). They have also collaborated with various artists such as Gregg Allman, Ben Harper, and Grace Potter.
The band's live performances are legendary for their energy and improvisational prowess. They have headlined major music festivals worldwide and embarked on successful tours across North America, Europe, and Australia.
