Gorka Benitez (born 1979 in Bilbao, Spain) is a highly respected and innovative percussionist, composer, and educator specializing in Basque traditional music and its contemporary fusions. He began his musical journey learning *txalaparta* (a Basque wooden percussion instrument) from master players like Josu Reparaz, quickly becoming a virtuoso.

Benitez’s career extends beyond performance; he’s a driving force in revitalizing Basque percussion traditions. He founded the group Oreina, exploring the possibilities of *txalaparta* within jazz, classical, and world music contexts – releasing albums like “Xaloa” (2006) and “Belharra” (2011) to critical acclaim.

He frequently collaborates with artists across genres, including Kepa Junkera and Iñaki Plaza, demonstrating his versatility. Beyond Oreina, Benitez composes for theatre and dance productions, and actively conducts workshops globally, sharing his expertise and promoting Basque culture. His work emphasizes rhythmic complexity, improvisation, and a deep connection to his cultural heritage. He continues to tour internationally and record as a solo artist & with various ensembles.
