Gibran Alcocer is a highly respected Mexican bassist, composer, and educator renowned for his versatility across jazz, Latin jazz, and contemporary improvised music. Born in Mexico City in 1976, Alcocer began his musical journey studying classical guitar before transitioning to the bass. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance from the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City and later a Master’s from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Performance in New York City.
Alcocer has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists including Paquito D'Rivera, Miguel Zenón, and David Sánchez. He is a founding member of the innovative trio, The Babel Project, exploring cross-cultural musical dialogues. His discography includes critically lauded albums like “Self-Portrait” (2014) and “Sand” (2018), showcasing his sophisticated harmonic approach and melodic sensibility.
Known for a warm tone and rhythmic precision, Alcocer’s playing seamlessly blends technical mastery with emotional depth. He currently resides in New York City where he actively performs, records, and teaches at institutions like the New School. He frequently leads workshops globally focusing on improvisation and bass technique.
