Frederica von Stade is a celebrated American mezzo-soprano renowned for her elegant phrasing, warm tone, and captivating stage presence. Born in 1945, she rose to prominence in the 1970s, becoming a leading interpreter of French and Italian repertoire. Von Stade’s career blossomed at the San Francisco Opera, where she debuted in 1970, and quickly expanded to major international houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and La Scala.

She’s particularly lauded for her portrayals of Cherubino in *The Marriage of Figaro*, Rosina in *The Barber of Seville*, and the Composer in Richard Strauss’ *Ariadne auf Naxos*. Beyond operatic roles, von Stade has enjoyed a distinguished concert career performing with leading orchestras worldwide.

A nine-time Grammy Award nominee, she won in 1976 for her performance in *Ariadne auf Naxos*.
