Experience Ernst Molden
Ernst Molden (born November 22, 1939, Hart bei Graz, Austria) is a highly influential Austrian jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader. He’s considered a pioneer of European free jazz and improvised music. Initially self-taught, Molden began performing in the late 1950s, quickly establishing himself within the burgeoning Austrian jazz scene.
His early work leaned towards hard bop before evolving into a distinctly personal style characterized by extended improvisations, unconventional techniques – including playing with a saw and other non-traditional implements – and a deeply rooted blues sensibility. He co-founded the Glühbirne collective in 1969, a crucial platform for avant-garde music in Austria.
Molden's discography spans decades and includes collaborations with internationally renowned musicians like Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, and Sainkho Namtchylak. He’s released numerous albums as a leader on labels like FMP and hatOLOGY. Awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1986 for his contributions to contemporary music, Molden continues to perform and record, remaining a vital force in experimental music globally.
