The English Symphony Orchestra (ESO), founded in 1964 by conductor Sir Anthony Collins, boasts a rich history rooted in championing British composers. Initially formed as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s reserve, it quickly established its own distinct identity, focusing on 20th and 21st-century repertoire alongside core classical works. Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the ESO gained renown for its extensive recordings under Collins, particularly of Elgar and Vaughan Williams, becoming a leading interpreter of their music.

Following periods of fluctuating stability, the orchestra was revitalized in 2015 under Kenneth Woods, adopting a flexible model prioritizing artistic quality and community engagement. The ESO now operates without a permanent home venue, performing across the Midlands and beyond. Known for its adventurous programming – blending established masterpieces with lesser-known gems – and commitment to new music commissions, the ESO has garnered critical acclaim for its innovative approach. They maintain a significant recording output, including numerous world premiere recordings and critically lauded interpretations of British orchestral works. The ESO actively promotes accessibility through educational initiatives and diverse concert formats.
