Elmo & Patsy (real names Elmer & Patsy Maupin) were a highly influential American country and bluegrass duo, active primarily from the 1960s through the 1980s. Though they never achieved mainstream commercial success, they became legendary within traditional country music circles, particularly revered by musicians. Beginning their career performing in the San Francisco Bay Area, they developed a distinctive sound characterized by close vocal harmonies, Patsy’s intricate mandolin playing, and Elmer’s understated guitar work.

Their repertoire largely consisted of traditional songs and obscure material revived with exceptional musicianship. They released several albums on labels like Folkways Records and County Records, including critically acclaimed efforts like “Old Time Sweethearts” (1978). Elmo & Patsy were instrumental in preserving and popularizing a raw, pre-Nashville style of country music.

They influenced a generation of Americana and alternative country artists – notably championed by figures like Bonnie Raitt and David Nelson – who appreciated their authenticity and dedication to roots music.
