Edward Gardner is a highly respected British conductor renowned for his insightful interpretations of 20th and 21st-century repertoire, alongside core orchestral works. He currently serves as Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra (since 2015), a position he’s extended to 2028. Gardner previously held the post of Principal Conductor of the English National Opera (2006-2013), where he championed contemporary opera and revitalized the company’s orchestral sound.

His career began with Glyndebourne, initially as a répétiteur and later conducting fully staged productions. He's a frequent guest conductor with leading orchestras internationally, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and Tonhalle Orchester Zürich.

Gardner is particularly celebrated for his performances of Britten, Tippett, and Stravinsky. Critics consistently praise his clarity of texture, dramatic pacing, and ability to draw nuanced performances from ensembles. He has received numerous awards including a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera in 2011.
