Originally established as a chamber orchestra by the Dubrovnik Conservatory, it quickly evolved into a full symphonic ensemble. Throughout its history, the DSO has been pivotal in Dubrovnik’s cultural life, performing extensively at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival – a relationship spanning decades and featuring numerous premieres of Croatian composers.
The orchestra’s repertoire encompasses works from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions, with a strong focus on Croatian musical heritage. They regularly collaborate with internationally renowned soloists, including names like Ivo Pogorelić and Maxim Vengerov. The DSO frequently tours internationally, performing across Europe and beyond, representing Croatian artistry on global stages.
Under various principal conductors – notably Pavle Dešpalj and currently Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli – the DSO has cultivated a reputation for technical precision and emotive performance. They've released several recordings showcasing their versatility and commitment to preserving and promoting classical music. The orchestra is funded by the City of Dubrovnik and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
