The Dresden Philharmonic (Dresdner Philharmonie) boasts a rich history stretching back to 1870, evolving from the Gewandhaus Concerts’ orchestra following a schism. Initially known for championing Richard Wagner’s works – conducting premieres of *The Flying Dutchman* and *Parsifal* under the composer’s direct guidance – the orchestra quickly established an international reputation.

Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, distinguished conductors like Karl Böhm, Rudolf Kempe, and Herbert Blomstedt shaped its sound. Currently under the musical direction of Markus Poschner since 2023 (following John Fiore's lengthy tenure), the Philharmonic continues a tradition of broad repertoire encompassing Baroque to contemporary music.
